The United States Mint started allowing authorized purchasers to buy the 2012 Gold Eagle on January 3, 2012. The coin is minted in four denominations—one-ounce, half-ounce, quarter-ounce, and tenth-ounce. The coin's production diminished in 2012 compared to the previous year, with the half-ounce piece’s production dropping most significantly at a 38% reduction from 2011’s rate. Only 43,000 American Gold Eagles were minted in 2012, and a mere 2,333 of them have been certified MS70 (a perfect grade) by the NGC.
